All for One - and One for All! Young D’Artagnan is desperate to join Athos, Porthos and Aramis as an elite Musketeer of the King’s Guard. To prove himself he plunges headlong into a thrilling adventure to retrieve the Queen’s jewels and restore her honour, survive the machinations of scheming Cardinal Richelieu, race the clock to save the hapless Mme Bonancieux and cross swords with one of the original and deadliest femmes fatales Milady de Winter. Set against a sweeping panorama of 17th century France at war, this production is a whirlwind of excitement, broad comedy and ingenious story-telling. Romance! Swashbuckling! Intrigue! Murder! Betrayal! Revenge...! It’s got the lot!
Alexandre Dumas wrote a series of five novels featuring D’Artagnan and the three musketeers, (The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years Later, The Viscount of Bragelonne, Louise de la Valliere and The Man in the Iron Mask). Since the first appeared in 1844 they have enjoyed an enormous popularity worldwide – and have been translated into more than 100 languages.
The tone of each is both thrilling and comic: the stories are not just textbook examples of the Historical Romance genre, but also hilarious satires of that genre. The devilish intrigues, perilous fights and cliffhanging suspense set the pulse racing, despite the fact that the four central characters are either penniless gamblers or drunken reprobates - or both!
2015 marks Illyria’s 24th open-air touring season. In 2000 it was the first UK open-air touring theatre company to tour annual productions of classics other than Shakespeare. The Importance of Being Earnest; Pride and Prejudice; Gulliver’s Travels and The Hound of the Baskervilles all received 5-star reviews and widespread acclaim, while The Hound of the Baskervilles received a recommendation in Time Out magazine and The Importance of Being Earnest won the company a Best Performance award at the Edinburgh Fringe. Following these nationwide successes, who better than Illyria to take on one of the greatest masterpieces of French comic literature!
With a reputation for staging some of the finest swordplay in the business (Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, Macbeth, Robin Hood), Illyria’s swashbuckling in THE THREE MUSKETEERS promises to be more dazzling than ever!
