Hailing from the serene hills of the Lake District, Hannah Rodríguez learnt to sing via Mexican father and ‘Northerner’ mother’s love for jazz music. The singer/songwriter/producer mimicked the greats such as Billie Holiday and Nina Simone as a child, and found her own soulful voice at the age of ten. Through her teens she delved into an array of different music genres discovered while attending summer music festivals, expanding her taste to include hip-hop, reggae, dub, indie and electronic music.
She began writing original songs with her guitar around the age of sixteen, and developed a direct and emotive narrative instantly.
Leaving her friends and family behind, she moved to London at eighteen and began collaborating with UK artists and US producers, resulting in a feature with Bristol-based The Caravan Collective, titled ‘Silver September’ and her own single ‘B2in1s’, produced by New York’s Hobbes Duende. During this time she also bagged performances at several renowned London venues such as Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and The Roundhouse.
The self-proclaimed ‘control freak’ then taught herself how to produce her own beats, drawing influence from IAMDDB, Kali Uchis and Doja Cat. Her songs developed a raw and DIY feel to them, with witty lyrics and unique sounds that were either recorded herself in her make-shift bedroom studio or found online.
After a little break from the scene, the songstress is back with her first full project, in the form of a mixtape which is entirely self-produced and titled ‘Baby’s Mixtape’. The name came about as the eight songs draw from a mix of genres that the artist connects with and retrospectively, she believes she wrote the songs in her ‘baby era’.
