Adrian Sherwood returns to Band on the Wall to revisit his work with seminal ’80’s industrial funk unit Tackhead. Whilst Adrian is arguably better known as the founder of the On-U Sound record label and his work with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, it is his role as producer and mixologist with Tackhead that tonight’s DJ set will be focussing on.
Tackhead were formed from a meeting between Adrian and drummer Keith LeBlanc in New York. With Doug Wimbish (bass) and Skip McDonald (guitar) LeBlanc had been in the house band for Sugar Hill Records, performing on such classics as ‘The Message’ and ‘White Lines’ by Grand Master Flash. Adrian brought a gravitas to the overall sound and added a generous dose of socio-political comment. What followed were landmark albums such as ‘Tackhead Tape Time’ and ‘Friendly as a Hand Grenade’ alongside Keith LeBlanc’s solo releases ‘Major Malfunction’ and ‘Stranger Than Fiction’. All with that demolition squad sound behind the rhythm section.
