Ban the Ban on Barmaids’ is a political theatre comedy exploring an historical event that happened in Stevenson Square at the beginning of the 20th Century. The ramifications are relevant today, since the devised sketch, involving audience interaction, re-enacts the public protest against banning barmaids from work because they were women.
Working class women’s and LGBT activists Esther Roper and Eva Gore-Booth rode in a carriage to Stevenson Square to protest against the local MP Winston Churchill - and won.
