Since the tender age of six years old Tom and Josh Phillips, aka Blank Cheque, have been honing their skills playing their respective instruments, enjoying practice and gigs alike. Based in Manchester, the 17 year old lads are currently gigging regularly across the UK.
Tom plays guitar and manages the loop pedal whilst providing backing vocals. Having achieved all his guitar grades Tom draws influences from several genres including jazz, indie, swing, rock and blues.
Josh plays saxophone and is lead vocalist. Beginning with the clarinet Josh progressed onto the alto sax as soon as he could physically lift the instrument. Passing all five jazz grades Josh is currently focussing on jazz styles but takes influences from swing, blues, rock and more modern musicians such as Arctic Monkeys and the Killers.
Blank Cheque have been performing for over three years at almost every type of event you can think of. Festivals across the UK including Symmetry Festival (Norfolk), Heather Festival (Leicester), Headlander Festival (Manchester) and many more. Big on the local pub scene in Greater Manchester, they’ve also played many venues in Manchester City Centre such as The Ruby Lounge, Matt & Phreds, DryBar, Retro Bar, The Bierkeller and in the Summer of 2014 they played at Manchester’s GMEX in front of a 3,000 strong crowd. Whilst branching out UK wide, they also do private functions such as private parties, weddings, birthdays, essentially if you give these boys an audience, they’ll entertain them!
The boys play a selection of covers as well as some of their own compositions and can tailor their set to suit any venue / event.
During the Summer of 2013 Blank Cheque recorded and released their debit demo EP titled “What Are You Doing? EP” with a follow up music video to the 4th track, Cover Band. This was greatly received by fans so following on from the unexpected success, the boys quickly embarked on the follow up EP released June 2014. A group of 4 tracks collectively known as “Down The Hill EP”. They spent a lot longer writing and producing this EP and the quality shows as they’ve added more instrumentation to fill out the sound. The lead/title track “Down The Hill” has gained huge support from fans with its music video telling the tale. Earning rave reviews, the sky seems like the only limit for the original music with more writing always on the go.
