Richard Jones is a soldier and magician, and the winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2016. With his captivating performances, Richard – born in 1990 in Leytonstone, East London – didn’t just impress the BGT judges, he also stole the hearts of the nation. After more than 2.5million people voted in the final, Richard was crowned the winner of BGT’s 10th series.Although Richard always enjoyed watching magic as a child, it wasn’t until he joined the army that he took it up, first performing in front of friends and family.
After developing his act, Richard started putting on shows in front of his colleagues. These grew so popular he was soon performing for visiting nations at Military Tattoos, including France and New Zealand.Richard Jones first auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent in Liverpool in January 2016. The audition aired on ITV on April 16 2016 with a consolidated audience of 12.5million watching at home. In his audition, Richard wowed the judges with his mind-reading skills, involving a David Beckham cut-out and turning a can of fizzy orange into hot tea, as well as giving Amanda Holden and David Walliams electric shocks.
Alesha Dixon described his performance as “fantastic, funny and engaging” and Richard was given four yeses by the judges.Richard’s stunning performance proved decisive when voting took place and Richard became the first ever magician to win Britain’s Got Talent. Despite his success and the multitude of media appearances and interviews following his win, Richard was soon back performing as a military musician. He was one of The Household Cavalry bandsmen, who performed in front of Her Majesty The Queen over the weekend of her official 90th birthday.
Richard has recently been promoted to Member of The Inner Magic Circle with Gold Star, the most prestigious honour in The Magic Circle.
