The nuclear age is a recent one, eclipsed by its first appearance in the form of the atomic bomb. Indeed, its impact on the geology of our planet is so significant that the fallout from nuclear technology heralded in a new geological age: the Anthropocene; an era dominated by man’s impact on the planet.
The Cold War was gripped by the existence of nuclear weapons and their potential for annihilation; a frightening prospect for all.
So what about nuclear energy? Where does it sit in all of this? It is a much cleaner energy source than coal, petrol, even solar, but also inevitably conjures up images of Chernobyl or Fukushima. Nuclear energy feels scary. A source of danger that cannot be sensed or controlled. To make matters worse, the secrecy around nuclear plants has historically been extremely high - with little to no communication to the surrounding communities most at risk.
