Buaidh nam Ban (Influence of Women) and Oigridh Sgoil Chiuil a' Phluic
Plockton Village Hall
The 2021 Blas commission will be delivered by the wonderful Gaelic singer and songwriter Kim Carnie (Manran, Staran).
Buaidh nam Ban (Influence of Women) will mark the 200-year anniversary of Mairi Mhor nan Oran (Big Mary of the Songs/Mary Macpherson); a nurse and prolific songwriter from Skye, known for her powerful songs of protest, praise, exile and hope. The commission will also celebrate the work of other great female bards of the Gaidhealtachd, including Sileas na Ceapaich, Maighread Nighean Lachlainn and Mairi Nighean Alasdair Ruaidh, exploring their lives and challenges they faced fighting against injustice and for equality.
Joining Kim on stage will be Megan Henderson, James MacIntosh, Sorren Maclean, Brian McAlpine & Cammy Maxwell.
Sgoil Chiuil na Gaidhealtachd opened in 2000, giving young Scottish traditional musicians the opportunity to develop their talent to its full potential. Tonight the next generation of Gaelic singers and traditional musicians from the current cohort of students will provide support for tonight's performance of the Blas commission.
