The 2021 Blas commission will be delivered by the wonderful Gaelic singer and songwriter Kim Carnie (Manran, Staran).
Buaidh nam Ban (Influence of Women) will mark the 200-year anniversary of Mairi Mhor nan Oran (Big Mary of the Songs/Mary Macpherson); a nurse and prolific songwriter from Skye, known for her powerful songs of protest, praise, exile and hope. The commission will also celebrate the work of other great female bards of the Gaidhealtachd, including Sileas na Ceapaich, Maighread Nighean Lachlainn and Mairi Nighean Alasdair Ruaidh, exploring their lives and challenges they faced fighting against injustice and for equality.
Joining Kim on stage will be Megan Henderson, James MacIntosh, Sorren Maclean, Brian McAlpine & Cammy Maxwell.
Also part of tonight's concert will be the Winner of the 2019 BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award, and 2016 BBC Radio 2 Young Folk award Brighde Chaimbeul from Sleat on the Isle of Skye. A native Gaelic speaker, her style is rooted in her native language and culture, but draws inspiration from a variety of global piping traditions such as from Cape Breton, Eastern Europe and Ireland.
The outstanding fiddler and composer Aidan O' Rourke (Lau), her musical partner and producer of her critically acclaimed debut album 'The Reeling', will join Brighde on stage.
