This autumn be transported to the shores of Polynesia, scattered archipelagos of Micronesia and the islands of Melanesia as Oceania arrives at the RA.

The UK’s first major survey of art and culture from a region rich in history, ritual and ceremony, Oceania features over 200 exceptional works - many of which are on display for the first time - and spans over 500 years with some of the earliest representations of art from the region, including the 14th century Kaitaia carving.

Alongside intricate items and rare historical objects such as ceremonial feast bowls, star charts, gifts laced with intricate feather work, shells and delicate carvings will be contemporary works by Oceanic artists, such as Lisa Reihana’s vast panoramic video In Pursuit of Venus [Infected], 2015-17.

Marking 250 years since Cook’s first voyage to the Pacific, Oceania will be a celebration of the dazzling and diverse art of the region, from the historic to the contemporary.
