    The Civil Wars

    The Civil Wars consists of the fantastic John Paul White, hailing from Florence, AL and the lovely Joy Williams, originally from Santa Cruz, CA, but now residing in East Nashville. The duo’s chance meeting fueled an immediate songwriting chemistry and creative synergy. Their second show ever, performed at a sold out Eddie’s Attic, was recordedand released as a free digital album. 

    The duo won “Best Folk Album” and “Best Country Duo/Group Performance” at 54th annual GRAMMY Awards. In addition to winning two awards, the duo performed 60 seconds of thier new album’s title track on the live broadcast. Moreover, the post-GRAMMY sales increase Total sales for Barton Hollow now total over ­­­­333,000 units (Sensibility Music).

    After embarking on a European tour March 2012, the duo will continue to celebrate the album’s success in the U.S. with performances on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!April 11 and “Good Morning America” April 19. Since January 2011, the band has performed three times on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” in addition to appearing on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” American Public Media’s “A Prairie Home Companion” and KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic.” Moreover, the duo will kick off the 38th season of PBS’s “Austin City Limits” with a taping on Wednesday, February 29 and will join the all-star line-ups at Sasquatch and Bonnaroo.     In addition to supporting Barton Hollow, the duo recently collaborated with Taylor Swift on “Safe & Sound,” the first single from the forthcoming major motion picture The Hunger Games. Moreover, the duo has teamed with acclaimed producer T Bone Burnett on the score for Finding North. The Participant Media documentary (Food, Inc.) recently premiered at Sundance and centers around the unspoken hunger epidemic in America. Of the film’s music, Variety heralds, “The element of Finding North perhaps most responsible for giving the film its rich texture is an especially soulful score. Acclaimed producer T Bone Burnett and musical duo The Civil Wars joined forces to create original music that evokes the American heartland by fusing elements of folk, country and bluegrass.”

    Released February 1, 2011, Barton Hollow debuted at #12 on the Billboard 200 and #1 on iTunes’ overall Albums chart. The album’s first single and title track was nominated for “Duo Video of the Year” at the 2011 CMT Music Awards, while the band was nominated for “Vocal Duo of the Year” at the 2011 CMA Awards and both “New/Emerging Artist of the Year” as well as “Duo/Group of the Year” at the 10th annual Americana Honors and Music Awards. Additionally, the band was selected as a VH1 “You Oughta Know” artist to watch and both the music videos for “Poison & Wine” and “Barton Hollow” have been featured on VH1’s “Top 20 Countdown.”
