Inspired by popular artists as far ranging as James Blake, Imogen Heap, Bat For Lashes and Stevie Nicks, London based singer-songwriter Robyn Sherwell is a name that has been on the lips of tastemakers since early 2014.
Signing to new label Birdland Records in 2013 after a couple of her YouTube cover videos (Ben Howard's "The Fear" and SBTRKT's "Hold On") came to the public's attention, Sherwell has since been working with producer David Kosten (Everything Everything, Bat For Lashes) on a debut album. Her two EPs to date, "Love Somebody" and "Islander", have received coverage from publications such as DIY, NME, Clash, Noisey, The 405 and The Fader, as well as radio support from Lauren Laverne, Huw Stephens, Jo Whiley and Tom Robinson.
In June 2015, her stripped-back cover of Fleetwood Mac's 1975 classic "Landslide" (from the aforementioned "Islander" EP) was chosen as the soundtrack to the trailer for the new film "Suffragette", starring Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter. This led to Lauren Laverne making the track her 6Music Recommends Track Of The Week, and Jo Whiley playing it twice in one show on BBC Radio 2. "Sometimes there are musical moments that just need to be repeated", declared the latter.
Recently amassing over 2 million cumulative Spotify streams, Sherwell has had a very busy 2015 on the festival circuit, taking in events such as Live At Leeds, The Great Escape, Dot To Dot, How The Light Gets In, Glastonbury, Tramlines, Deer Shed and Wilderness.
Of her current single "Pale Lung", Sherwell says: "It's about falling for someone you're not supposed to fall for. I had this experience a few years back and wrote the song. It summarises that specific mix of guilt and desire at that moment you first realise and admit to yourself there is a powerful spark with someone you can't or probably shouldn't pursue. The song still feels like telling a secret, as it did when I wrote it."
