Millport Country Music Festival

Millport Country Music Festival
1st to 3rd September 2017

Now in it's 23rd year, Millport Country Music Festival is proud to welcome Nashville artists and the cream of UK country music to the beautiful Isle of Cumbrae in the Firth of Clyde, a short ferry ride of less than 10 minutes from Largs.

The Core Festival will run from Friday evening, 1st September 2017, through the weekend until late on Sunday, featuring many country and tribute bands, together with the Grand Parade on the waterfront at 2pm on Saturday 2nd, line dancing, children’s entertainment and much more.

Under the cover of a huge marquee, situated on a site adjacent to the Core Festival, concerts for 3,000 people will be held on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons/early evenings.

Recently signed to Big Machine in Nashville and fresh from the success of their latest album, ‘My Universe’, THE SHIRES will headline the Saturday 2nd September line up.

In his first ever appearance in Scotland, MARK CHESNUTT, with 14 US country No 1s and 23 top 10 singles to his name and a new album ‘Tradition Lives’ just released, will close out the concert element of the festival on Sunday 3rd September.

Direct from Nashville will come three rising country artists, DAVID RAY, MORGAN FRAZIER and ADLEY STUMP, to provide support over the weekend. Adding to the excitement will be the appearance of Glasgow’s own ASHTON LANE, with their full band, on Sunday 3rd September.

As in previous years, the core festival will be centred in the grounds of Garrison House and there will be numerous other music and entertainment venues throughout the town. The concert site, which is separately ticketed, will be in the field immediately behind Garrison House and easily accessed from College Street. A giant marquee will be erected in the field to provide protection from the vagaries of our wonderful Scottish weather. Food, drink, toilets, first aid will all be available in the concert site.

Concert Artists & Headliners

CONCERT HEADLINERS

The Shires
The impact that Ben Earle and Crissie Rhodes have had over the past whirlwind 18 months has been so great, the UK country music scene really now falls into two dynasties: pre-Shires and post-Shires.
In March 2015, when their debut album Brave became the first British country album ever to enter the UK top ten, it signalled an amazing breakthrough for the English duo and confirmed that the attitude to country music in the UK had changed for good. Their second album, My Universe, released in September 2016,  has gone gold
Now it’s official: Britain has home-grown country to be proud of, crafted by artists not from Tennessee or Texas, but Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.

Mark Chesnutt
Carrying the torch in the footsteps of George Jones and Waylon Jennings, Chesnutt plays nearly 100 dates a year.
He has four platinum albums, five gold albums, 14 No. 1 singles and 23 Top10 singles to his name; his trademarked voice has shaped the music of today’s country music newcomers and the new country music generation. Mark has recently released a new album, Tradition Lives, which has received a warm welcome from fans and critics alike.

CONCERT ARTISTS

Ashton Lane
2016 saw Ashton Lane perform at the famous Country 2 Country festival in London, as well as receiving nominations in two categories at this year’s BCMAs (British Country Music Awards) for best duo and best song. They also played an impressive set at McEwan’s Party At The Palace in August, and toured extensively round Europe in October and November 2016. Their most recent album Nashville Heart received five star reviews.
Ashton Lane kick off 2017 with a string of UK dates and they are  returning to Germany and Denmark by the spring for another tour.
The band has a romantic back-story and come from fine musical stock. Ashton Lane are husband and wife duo, Esther and Tim O’Connor and they are part of a new wave of homegrown modern country music originating in the UK.

Adley Stump
One of of the artists flying in from Nashville this year, Adley was named a winner of the Hyundai and The Recording Academy® fourth annual GRAMMY Amplifier® program, alum of NBC’s hit singing competition show “The Voice” (Season 2, Team Blake Shelton) and the featured Music performer at the Miss USA telecast.
Her military tribute single & video “Stay At Home Soldier” drew accolades across the board and was featured on 115 iHeartmedia Country station websites, Syndicated “Taste Of Country Nights” radio show and Slacker’s “Weekly Country Countdown”; she performed live in front of more than 100,000 fans throughout the year, including the CMA Fan Fair in Nashville.

Morgan Frazier
Hailing originally from Breckenridge, Texas, Morgan grew up on country music; artists like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Hank Sr, Buck Owens, Johnny Cash, Hank Snow etc. However, she also listened to the music that her dad loved – AC/DC, CCR, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, while her mum also exposed her to Motown and funk. A pretty wide spread of music therefore formed the way she thinks about music – “I’m a song person. It doesn’t matter what kind of music it is. I love it all.”
In addition to her successful appearances on the US version of The Voice in 2015 and the release of her album ‘The Best’ later that year, Morgan has developed a reputation as a fine songwriter, collaborating with some of Nashville’s finest to write songs for a number of other artists, as well as for her own next recording. As a regular performer in Nashville’s Lower Broadway clubs, Morgan has all the attributes you could hope for to deliver a great set for country music lovers.

David Ray
Ray got his start in his native Michigan, a state known for the likes of Bob Seger, Ted Nugent and the Eagles’ Glenn Frey. While leaning a few chords on his father’s guitar, Ray gravitated towards the sounds of country, classic rock and folk, listening to people like Garth Brooks and Dwight Yoakam as well as James Taylor.
He knew he wanted a career in music, but Ray did the prudent thing and pursued a college education at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. He ended up playing regularly as a solo acoustic artist at the Cabin, a major college hangout in the mid-Michigan area. He still returns to the North Country on occasion to play at the venue where he honed his chops and learned how to work an audience.
When Ray moved to Nashville in 2010, he hit the ground running, performing almost as soon as he pulled into town. In addition to performing in acoustic, in-the-round settings, Ray also performed at Paradise Park on Lower Broadway for a few months before landing steady gigs at Honky Tonk Central and the Legendary Tootsies Orchid Lounge.
In conjunction with the release of his first album “Earthquake’ in 2016, David played a number of festival and stadium shows last year supporting top country artists like Blake Shelton, Eric Church, Tim McGraw and Zac Brown Band.

Travel and Accommodation

WHERE IS MILLPORT?
Millport is on the beautiful Isle of Great Cumbrae, which is in the Firth of Clyde in the West of Scotland.

HOW DO I GET TO MILLPORT?
It is only a short 10 minute ferry ride to the island from Largs, which in turn is only 40 minutes drive from Glasgow Airport and less than an hour by train from Glasgow Central.

By Car & Coach – the Motorway network from Glasgow and the M8, takes you to the A737. The A760 then takes you directly to Largs. Many choose to leave their car in Largs, either in the car park on the main promenade next to the ferry port (a postcode for those using sat nav. to this location is KA30 8LZ) or on one of the back roads near the ferry terminal. If you choose to come over on the ferry as a foot passenger, once you have parked in Largs or alighted your coach, simply follow the instructions down below from point (1).

For those who choose to bring their cars or coaches over on the ferry; when you come onto the island turn left, and stay on the coast road (do not take the right turn directing you into Millport 400m from the ferry). The postcode for those using sat nav. is KA28 0LH.

By Rail – with the close proximity of Largs train station to the Millport ferry, and the excellent links to Glasgow Central train station, this is understandably a very popular (and low carbon) way of reaching the island. You may find it cheaper to book tickets to Glasgow, and then buy a separate ticket for the last short leg of the journey from Glasgow Central to Largs.

(1) Once you arrive in Largs train station simply head out the main exit, and once on the high street you will see the slip way, from where the ferry departs, 100 metres to your left.

(2) To the left of the slip way there is a small ferry office where you can buy a return passenger ticket for under £5. Then board the ferry (on the return journey no tickets are collected, so you only need a ticket to get to the island).

(3) 8 minutes after leaving Largs you will arrive on the Cumbrae Slip, where a bus will be waiting. Currently tickets are £2 for a single journey. The bus stops, about 10 minutes later, outside Garrison House, which is the site of the core festival.

By Air – Glasgow Airport has flights to and from many UK and international cities. There is a regular bus service from Glasgow Airport to Paisley Gilmour Street train station (on most days, throughout the day, this runs every 10 minutes), currently this route is served by the no. 66 and takes 14 minutes. This 2 mile journey is also possible by taxi. From Gilmour Street, a regular direct train service to Largs takes approximately 45 minutes. Once you arrive at Largs, simply follow the instructions above from step (1). Alternatively, you can rent a car or even get a taxi to Largs from the airport.

WHERE CAN I STAY IN MILLPORT?
Millport has a large selection of guesthouses, self-catering and caravan sites available throughout the year. Please note however that due to the popularity of this festival these are usually very busy and we suggest booking early. Further information on available accommodation can be found on the Isle of Cumbrae Tourist Information website.

During the festival additional campsites will be operating both in the centre of the town near the festival itself and on the outer limits of the town, but still within walking distance of the festival. Further details of this will be added in due course, please check back soon and keep an eye on our social media channels for more information.

CAMPING
There are a small number of parking pitches in Garrison House itself, with most of the camping facilities located near The Westbourne on the outer limits of Millport, but still within walking distance of the festival.
Please be aware that the following rules MUST be adhered to while using the campsite within the Garrison House grounds:

  • All tents and vans must be in allocated spaces. Those not compliant will be notified and directed to an appropriate spot
  • No campfires permitted under any circumstances (small, attended BBQs are permitted)
  • No loud music or generators after 11pm
  •  No tents or vans to be sited on the roadway
  •  No vehicles are permitted in the campsite at any time
  •  Place all rubbish in proper containers

A suggested donation of £20 per tent/van is expected for the use of the campsite for the weekend.

The campsite will be available from noon Thursday 31st August until noon Tuesday 5th September. Please note that only a limited number of motorhomes will be permitted within the Garrison House grounds.

Please be aware that it will cost you more to bring a campervan or caravan across on the ferry.
