9th MAY - FILM SCREENING: ALMOST FAMOUS

Dir. Cameron Crowe, 2000.
Cert. 15

Set in 1973, Almost Famous chronicles the funny and often poignant coming of age of 15-year-old William, an unabashed music fan who is inspired by the seminal bands of the time. When his love of music lands him an assignment from Rolling Stone magazine to interview the up-and-coming band Stillwater – fronted by lead guitar Russell Hammond and lead singer Jeff Bebe William – he embarks on an eye-opening journey with the band on tour, despite the objections of his protective mother.

14th MAY - BAZ LUHRMANN DOUBLE BILL: MOULIN ROUGE! + ROMEO & JULIET

Band on the Wall Film Club brings you a double-bill of two Baz Luhrmann classics – Moulin Rouge! and Romeo + Juliet.

MOULIN ROUGE!
Moulin Rouge! is a celebration of love and creative inspiration, taking place in the infamous, gaudy and glamorous Parisian nightclub at the cusp of the 20th century. A young poet (Ewan McGregor), who is plunged into the heady world of Moulin Rouge, begins a passionate affair with the club’s most notorious and beautiful star (Nicole Kidman).

ROMEO + JULIET
For this hugely ambitious big screen adaptation of this classic Shakespearean romantic tragedy, Luhrmann updates the setting to a post-modern city named Verona Beach. In this version, the Capulets and the Montagues are two rival gangs. Juliet (Claire Danes) is attending a costume ball thrown by her parents. Her father Fulgencio Capulet (Paul Sorvino) has arranged her marriage to the boorish Paris (Paul Rudd) as part of a strategic investment plan. Romeo attends the masked ball and he and Juliet fall in love.

Dir. Baz Luhrmann, 1996 & 2001
Cert. 12

16th MAY - PSYCHEDELIC DOUBLE BILL: FEAR & LOATHING LAS VEGAS + DIG! + MANCHESTER PSYCH FEST DJS

Band on the Wall presents a double bill of psychedelic modern film classics, plus Manchester Psych Fest DJs keeping the vibes rolling til late.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the story of Raoul Duke (Johnny Depp) and his attorney Dr. Gonzo (Benicio Del Toro), who drive a red convertible across the Mojave desert to Las Vegas with a suitcase full of drugs to cover a motorcycle race. As their consumption of drugs increases at an alarming rate, the stoned duo trash their hotel room and fear legal repercussions. Duke begins to drive back to L.A., but after an odd run-in with a cop (Gary Busey), he returns to Sin City and continues his wild drug binge.

Dir. Terry Gilliam, 1998
Cert. 18

Dig! is one of the best regarded rock documentaries of modern times. After the alternative music boom of the early 1990s, two bands choose very different paths to fame. Portland, Oregon’s the Dandy Warhols, led by the self-conscious and career-minded Courtney Taylor-Taylor, sign with a major label and score a radio hit. San Francisco’s Brian Jonestown Massacre, fronted by the abrasive and unpredictable Anton Newcombe, seemingly go out of their way to impede their own rise to fame with a series of increasingly bizarre incidents, including onstage fistfights.

Dir. Ondi Timoner, 2005
Cert. 15
